Matthew and Robert C. Caddell have both pleaded not guilty to assault and battery in the July 4 incident in Watauga County.

Matthew Caddell was charged after his son, Matthew, allegedly jumped on top of a man and stabbed him as well as threatening him.

His attorney argued that the injuries did not result from an assault or a domestic situation.

They argued that their clients did nothing wrong and are innocent.

In court Friday, Matthew Caddell’s attorney argued his client acted in self defense as the two men began arguing.

Judge Paul A. Anderson agreed and set bail for his son at $150,000.

Robert Caddell, 33, is charged with unlawful use of deadly weapon and unlawful use of a weapon in a felony.

Judge Anderson has previously granted a preliminary hearing for both men.
